1. Is laminate flooring good for high-traffic areas?
Yes — laminate flooring is one of the most durable options for high-traffic rooms because it’s built with a tough wear layer that resists scratches, dents, and daily impact. This makes laminate ideal for living rooms, hallways, playrooms, rental properties, and busy households with kids or pets. The scratch resistance and long-term durability often make laminate a better choice than traditional hardwood in homes with heavy foot traffic.
2. Does laminate flooring need underlayment?
Most laminate floors require underlayment to improve stability, reduce noise, and protect against moisture. Underlayment also helps smooth out minor imperfections in the subfloor, creating a level surface for the laminate to lock together properly. Skipping underlayment can lead to noisy planks, loose locking systems, and premature wear, so proper underlayment is essential for a long-lasting laminate installation.
3. Can laminate be installed over tile or old flooring?
Yes — laminate can often be installed directly over tile, vinyl, or older flooring as long as the surface is clean, level, and firmly secured. Installing laminate over existing floors can reduce labor cost and installation time. However, if the old flooring is uneven or damaged, it may need leveling or removal. A proper assessment ensures the new laminate will lock tightly and lay flat without gaps or movement.
4. Is laminate flooring waterproof?
Traditional laminate flooring is water-resistant, but not fully waterproof — meaning it can handle minor spills but shouldn't be exposed to standing water. Waterproof laminate flooring is available and designed for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements, but it still requires correct installation and sealed expansion gaps to prevent moisture from reaching the core. The right product depends on your room, moisture levels, and how the space is used.
5. How long does laminate flooring typically last?
High-quality laminate flooring can last 10–25 years depending on the thickness, wear layer, foot traffic, cleaning habits, and installation quality. Laminate with a thicker wear layer and moisture-resistant core tends to last longer and perform better in busy homes. Proper installation, correct underlayment, and regular maintenance all help extend the lifespan of your laminate floors.
6. Can damaged laminate boards be replaced?
Yes — damaged or swollen laminate boards can be removed and replaced individually if the flooring was installed with a floating system. This makes laminate easier to repair than many other flooring types. Board replacement is ideal for accidental damage, scratches in isolated spots, or single-board water issues. For widespread water damage or swelling, a larger section may need to be replaced to achieve a consistent, smooth finish.
