1. What’s the difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood?
Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of natural wood, while engineered hardwood has a real wood surface layered over a stable plywood core. Engineered hardwood is great for moisture-prone areas, and solid hardwood is ideal for long-term durability and refinishing.
2. Can hardwood floors be installed over concrete?
Yes — engineered hardwood can be glued down or floated over concrete. Solid hardwood generally requires a plywood subfloor. Proper moisture testing is essential to prevent cupping or warping.
3. How long does hardwood flooring installation take?
Most hardwood floor installations take 1–3 days depending on square footage, subfloor prep, acclimation needs, and whether furniture must be moved. Refinishing or sanding adds additional time.
4. Can hardwood floors be refinished instead of replaced?
Yes — hardwood refinishing can restore scratches, dull finishes, and minor damage. Solid hardwood can be refinished multiple times, while engineered hardwood can be refinished once or twice depending on veneer thickness.
5. What causes squeaky or noisy hardwood floors?
Squeaks usually come from loose boards, subfloor movement, or seasonal expansion. Repairs may include tightening fasteners, adding screws from below, or injecting adhesive under loose spots.
